Alameda County retained Shah Kawasaki Architects to repurpose an existing office building into the County’s new forensic and public health labs. The facility includes state-of-the-art spaces for the County Coroner’s Bureau, County Criminalistics Lab, and the County Public Health Department Laboratories.
The building is designed to provide each department a distinct area within the shared facility. Laboratories, including Autopsy, Biology, Fire Arms, Molecular, Computer Forensics and others, are supported by adjoining office and administration suites. The design incorporates controlled delivery and receipt of evidence and samples by other agencies and the public.
Through high efficiency HVAC systems, building reuse, and sustainable material selection, the project is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
