Operations Building at the D.A. Porath Facility

A new two-story Operations Building consolidates administrative and shop functions into a single, efficient facility that improves operational workflow, separates incompatible uses, and provides flexibility for future operations. Set within a eucalyptus forest that serves as a critical stopover habitat for migrating butterflies along California’s West Coast, the design draws inspiration from the dappled sunlight filtering through the tree canopy and was carefully planned to minimize environmental impacts through thoughtful construction sequencing around the butterfly migration season. Recognizing the sensitivity of the site, the project was developed through close collaboration with the County of Santa Cruz, the California Coastal Commission, and other regulatory and environmental stakeholders to balance operational needs with long-term habitat stewardship.
