One of the most rewarding aspects of architectural practice is the connections we make with our collaborators. For Youngchae Lee, Lincoln Square Recreation Center was rich with such opportunities. Grappling with the Oakland Chinatown community’s request to honor the history of the site, she reached out to Linda Yamane, a Rumsen Ohlone artist, for help. Linda and Youngchae, along with Chinatown community members, worked together to find the right expression—the Chinese tapestry symbolizing well wishes, the Ohlone basket pattern, and the California Flora we all love.
